Homemade Blueberry Muffins with the BEST Crumble Topping

The sweetest little addition to our mornings (and sometimes our evenings, too!)

There’s something about the smell of fresh-baked muffins filling the house that just makes everything feel a little more like home.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know that I love spending time in the kitchen. But what you may not know is that my love for baking really started back in 2020. Like so many of us, I found myself spending more time at home, trying new things, and finding joy in the little moments. Somewhere along the way, baking became one of my favorite ways to unwind.

And six years later, it’s still something I absolutely love doing!

One of my favorite little traditions is baking something sweet for the family to enjoy after dinner. Nothing too fancy or complicated, just something homemade that everyone can look forward to.

These blueberry muffins have become one of those recipes that I find myself making over and over again.

A Little Something for Everyone

Alexander absolutely loves these muffins, which is always a win in my book! And the best part? William and I enjoy them just as much.

They’re perfect for those busy mornings when we need something quick to grab on the way out the door, but they’re also just as good as an afternoon snack with a cup of coffee. And if I’m being completely honest, I’ve definitely enjoyed one (or two) after dinner.

What I love most about these muffins is that they’re soft, moist, packed with fresh blueberries, and topped with the most delicious buttery crumble.

And listen, when it comes to the crumble topping, the more, the better!

I don’t want just a little sprinkle. I want that golden, sweet, buttery goodness in every single bite.

This recipe is inspired by a blueberry muffin recipe from Mom’s Dish, with a few little adjustments I’ve made along the way to make it my own.

One of my favorite swaps is using vanilla Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. I use 5 ounces, and it gives the muffins such a delicious, tender texture with a subtle hint of vanilla.

Trust me, it’s so good!

Let’s Make Some Blueberry Muffins!

Prep Time: 10–15 minutes
Bake Time: 25–30 minutes
Oven Temperature: 400°F
Servings: Approximately 18 muffins

Ingredients

For the Blueberry Muffins:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

  • ¼ cup oil

  • 1 cup granulated sugar (or 1/2c granulated + 1/2c brown sugar)

  • ¾ cup oat milk

  • 5 ounces vanilla Greek yogurt

  • 2 large eggs

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 ½ cups fresh blueberries

For the Crumble Topping:

  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar

  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

My personal tip: If you’re anything like me and LOVE a good crumble topping, go ahead and make a little extra. You won’t regret it!

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Preheat Your Oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F and line your muffin pan with paper liners.

This recipe makes approximately 18 muffins, so you may need to bake in batches depending on the size of your muffin pan.

Step 2: Mix Your Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Once everything is combined, set the bowl aside.

Step 3: Combine Your Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together your melted butter, oil, sugar, milk, vanilla Greek yogurt, eggs, and vanilla extract.

The Greek yogurt is my little twist on this recipe! I love the extra moisture it adds, and the vanilla flavor works beautifully with the blueberries.

Step 4: Bring Everything Together

Gradually fold the dry ingredients into your wet ingredients.

Be careful not to overmix! You want everything just combined. A few lumps in your batter are perfectly fine.

Step 5: Add Your Blueberries

Gently fold in your fresh blueberries, making sure they’re evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Spoon the batter into your prepared muffin liners, filling each about ¾ of the way full.

Step 6: Make That Crumble Topping!

Now for my FAVORITE part!

In a small bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and softened butter. Use a fork to mix everything together until you have a crumbly texture.

Generously sprinkle the crumble over each muffin.

And when I say generously, I mean GENEROUSLY! Don’t be shy with it. That buttery, sugary topping is what really takes these muffins to the next level.

Step 7: Bake Until Golden

Place your muffins in the oven and bake at 400°F for approximately 25–30 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

Every oven is a little different, so I recommend checking them around the 25-minute mark.

Step 8: Let Them Cool (If You Can!)

Allow the muffins to cool in the pan for about 5–10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Of course, if your family is anything like mine, someone is probably already standing in the kitchen waiting to grab one!

A Few Tips for the Perfect Blueberry Muffins

After making these muffins, I’ve learned a few things that help make them even better.

Don’t overmix the batter. This is one of the easiest ways to keep your muffins light, fluffy, and tender.

Use fresh blueberries when possible. I love the little bursts of blueberry flavor in every bite. If you’re using frozen blueberries, fold them in while still frozen to help prevent too much color bleeding into the batter.

The Greek yogurt makes a difference. I use vanilla-flavored Greek yogurt, which adds moisture and a little extra vanilla flavor. It’s such an easy substitution!

Don’t skimp on the crumble. I know I’ve said this a few times already, but seriously. More crumble, please!

Store them properly. Once completely cooled, keep your muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for about 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days. You can also freeze them for a quick breakfast option later.

It’s the Little Things

I think one of the things I’ve come to appreciate most as I’ve gotten older is how much joy can be found in the simplest routines.

Not everything has to be a big occasion or a special celebration. Sometimes it’s just a random evening at home, baking something sweet while the family settles in for the night.

What started as something to pass the time back in 2020 has turned into a little tradition that I genuinely look forward to.

And now, years later, it’s one of those things that feels like a small part of our family’s story.

Whether I’m making these for Alexander, packing one for William to grab in the morning, or sitting down with my own muffin and a warm cup of coffee, it’s those little everyday moments that mean the most.

So if you’ve been wanting to get into baking or you’re simply looking for a delicious homemade muffin recipe, give these a try!

They’re easy, delicious, and perfect for sharing with the people you love.

And remember… when in doubt, add more crumble!

If you make these, I’d love to know what you think! Leave a comment below or tag me on Instagram so I can see your blueberry muffin creations.

Happy baking!
